CERE reading list

by
Stephen W. Draper,   Department of Psychology,   University of Glasgow.

This page may be further updated but is a largely complete set of refs for CERE, although it contains some that relate to topics that won't be covered in CERE. It has far more than you can read, but most items have a note against them on the subject of the paper, so you can find things related to a given topic.

See also the CERE course page for other/short pieces related to a) Perry's approach b) Deep and surface learning; c) Laurillard's model.

    Five or eight deviant thinkers

There are a handful of researchers whose ideas are to me shockingly different. Obviously this is not an absolute category, but something about me. But I'm listing them here (ref.s to their work are above in the main part of this page) in case you want to get a shock to your usual ways of looking at things to do with education.

  • Sfard (1998)
  • Bales (1950)
  • Hall (1959). A very short book. Divides kinds of meaning into 3 types not normally thought of. How much of even everyday knowledge / skill is learned (often late in life) without us realising this. Implicit knowledge. The shock is that so much of what we learn is not normally even thought of as learned, let alone as "education".
  • Sugata Mitra (various)
  • Dave Cormier and Connectivism: see Bali & Honeychurch (2014). How teachers perhaps should not organise learning at all. Mitra largely thinks this too.
  • Arendt (1954)
  • Gee, James Paul (2003) "What video games have to teach us about learning and literacy" Good for making me rethink a lot about education.
  • US guy

    Five great papers

Great as in rich, mind-changing, ....

  • Bloom (1984)
  • Sfard (1998)
  • Chi et al. (2008)
  • The three Wood et al. papers on contingent tutoring
  • Etkina (2015)

  • Smith et al. (2009)
